Spotlight On Ho`ala Artists

Ho`ala School students Kalei Luna, Brandon Ells, and Bridgett Burkholder were featured a recent Sunday edition of the Star Bulletin. Brandon was interning at thirtyninehotel, a Chinatown art gallery, when gallery co-owner Gelareh approached him with the idea of opening his own show. Hence was born The Young Hopefuls exhibit, a collection of work from 10 students representing various schools around Oahu. See the Star Bulletin article at:

Elementary School -- Living Biographies

Elvis has been sighted at Ho`ala School! This time in the form of a 5th grade student!

Last week, Phyllis Norton's 4th-5th grade class finished a biographical project based on the book "The 100 People Who Changed America."

Each student chose a person to "become" for a day through writing, dress and classroom presentation. That day, the room included such famous personalities as Oprah Winfrey, Tiger Woods, Ronald Reagan and Pocahontas. Other cameos included Hellen Keller, Bruce Lee, Abraham Lincoln, Babe Ruther, Amelia Earthart, Michael Jordan, Sacagawea, Gloria Steinam, Andy Warhol and Walt Disney.

Noted the 5th-grade student who spent the day as Oprah: "She's awesome because she helps people through crisis and stuff like that!"

Students spent the day dressed in character, and then each spoke before the class, answering questions about "their lives."

The student who "was" Walt Disney for the day stated clearly: "He made Disney World, so he's cool."
