SCUBA

During the first semester of the school year, the 11th grade marine biology class decided we wanted to be SCUBA ( Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) certified. So we headed out toward the North Shore to a little dive shop called Deep Ecology. Under the guidance of dive instructors, Paul and Stuart, we went to a pool to learn the basics. We went to various dive sites and got our basic SCUBA certification. But during the second semester, we went back to get our Advanced Certification. Dive instructors, Stuart, Kim and Brad helped us get over our fears as we decended to 93 feet to a ship wreck, and went on a night dive. We also learned navigation techniques and got a chance to observe the life under the water. After the night dive, we went back to the dive shop and got our pictures taken to go on our Advanced Certification card. We had to have a total of five dives to be certified. We did the five dives over three different days.
Day One
On our first day, we went on two dives. We were divided into two groups, one group with Stuart, and one with Brad. With Stuart, we did navigation techniques using our compass to swim in a straight line and back, also to swim in a square. With Brad, we were able to take a look at the fish and other sea organisms along the coral reefs. It gave us a chance to appreciate what we were doing. Both dives were at Shark's Cove on the North Shore.

Day Two
Our second time out was on the west side. It was our boat dive. It was about a twenty minute boat ride out into the ocean. Our first dive was down to a ship wreck, decending down to 93 feet. That was awesome and creepy at the same time. Our second dive was a regular dive off the shore of Makaha Surf Beach. The conditions weren't that good for taking under water pictures, too murky. Day Three
The last dive of our course was the night dive down at Shark's Cove. Our group was divided into two groups again. We suited up at around six six thirty and made our way down the hill. We saw a lot more fish than we would see in the day time. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. When we surfaced, it was a beautiful sight to see the stars above and our lights still shining under the water. Over all, we all had so much fun during both our Basic and Advanced SCUBA courses. We all came over our fears and for some, stepped out of our comfort zones. Thank you Sharon for going through all that extra stress to make that happen for us. You're awesome!!!
